  • Empowering Women in Housebuilding: Sarah’s Evolving Journey with the ‘I am a Housebuilder’ Campaign

    Hello everyone

I’m thrilled to share with you an exciting initiative that I’ve been involved in – the ‘I am a Housebuilder’ campaign. As the Managing Director of Skipton Properties, a family-owned business known for its commitment to excellence, I’ve joined forces with other industry leaders as part of the esteemed ‘Magnificent Seven Housebuilders’ to drive positive change in the housebuilding sector.

The ‘I am a Housebuilder’ campaign, initiated by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for SME Housebuilders, aims to address the longstanding gender disparities and image challenges prevalent in our industry. It’s no secret that women are significantly underrepresented in housebuilding, with less than 2% of SME housebuilding companies being owned and led by women. Additionally, the workforce gender gap is stark, with only 297,000 women compared to 1.8 million men in construction roles across the UK. These statistics highlight the urgent need for change.

I firmly believe that the housebuilding industry has immense potential for growth and innovation, but it’s hampered by outdated perceptions and a significant gender imbalance. Through the ‘I am a Housebuilder’ campaign, we’re committed to breaking down these barriers and inspiring more women to enter and lead in this field.

The initiative is being driven by the APPG’s new secretariat, Edwin de Silva, an industry veteran and Co-Chair for the Regional Builders Hub Steering Group in support of The King’s Foundation and Chair of the APPG, Andrew Lewer MBE, Member of Parliament Northampton South. The campaign’s pledges include increasing the visibility of successful women within the sector, establishing a senior mentoring network, and collaborating with trade bodies to promote the industry to women of all ages.

As part of the ‘Magnificent Seven Housebuilders,’ my peers and I are dedicated to mentoring and supporting more women to become SME housebuilders. This mentorship aspect is crucial, as it aims to guide aspiring female leaders through the intricacies of the industry and provide them with the tools and confidence needed to succeed.

What are we doing at Skipton Properties to support the campaign and bring more women into roles in construction?

Well, we’re currently developing a more robust apprenticeship programme to ensure our apprentices thrive; considering the shortage of women in our industry apprenticeships will be key in reshaping it. Additionally, we’re elevating several of our female managers and other personnel into key roles in the business to develop their potential to lead. I’ll be taking a key role in this, alongside my sister, Caroline and our Financial Director, Luke.

Finally, over the next few months, we’ll be shining a light on the diverse range of women in our business in the hope you may find out a little bit more about what they do each day, how that shapes our business, hopefully raising awareness and interest in these roles.

    Warm regards,

    Sarah

  • We’re partnering with Own New to Offer Lower-Rate Mortgages for New Home Buyers!

    Own New

We proudly announce our partnership with Own New to introduce the Own New Rate Reducer mortgage scheme product. This innovative scheme aims to make mortgages more affordable for individuals purchasing newly built homes, providing access to lower interest rates and reduced monthly payments during the initial mortgage period.

“Although we have had a good start to the year, we are still seeing many potential buyers putting their moving plans on hold because of affordability and interest rates. It is extremely pleasing to work in partnership with Own New and offer Rate Reducer to our customers – giving them access to highly competitive mortgage deals which make purchasing one of our new build homes so much easier.”

Caroline Van-Niekerk, Sales and Creative Director

    How Does Own New Work?

Own New Rate Reducer Mortgages allow buyers to purchase newly built homes with lower interest rates and reduced monthly payments during the initial period. Own New collaborates with house builders and lenders to reduce the overall cost involved with mortgage loans on newly built properties, funded by house builders’ contributions towards the cost of the mortgage.

    • Find an eligible new build home you love.
    • Arrange your mortgage with an approved Own New mortgage broker.
    • Own 100% of your new home.

“In today’s economic climate, we’ve partnered with national house builders like Skipton Properties to introduce a straightforward solution—a regular mortgage with lower monthly payments. This initiative is making home-ownership more accessible and affordable, allowing people to pursue their dream homes without compromising their financial stability.”

Elliot Darcy, Founder of Own New

    Own New news

Take Advantage of Reduced Rates & Affordable Home-ownership Opportunities

We encourage all interested parties to explore this opportunity for more affordable home ownership. Eligibility for Own New Rate Reducer mortgages will be based on affordability, subject to receiving regulated advice from our independent mortgage broker, the Mortgage Advice Bureau, and ultimately subject to lender terms and conditions.

“We calculated that on a 35-year mortgage, with a two-year fixed rate deal of 4.39% per cent, buyers of a new house priced at £525,000 would have been facing initial monthly repayments of £1469 on their property. A figure like that will be well above a lot of people’s budget levels, especially in the current financial climate.

Jo continued: “But with an Own New Rate Reducer mortgage of 2.39 per cent, buyers of that same property would be paying just £1108 per month on their mortgage for the first two years. That’s a significant saving of £361 a month.

“Without having access to the lower interest rates provided with a Rate Reducer mortgage, most people’s options become seriously limited. Many would have been faced with either taking out a longer-term mortgage, opting for a house in a lower price bracket or simply to carry on living where they are.”

*Example is based on a 2 year initial period and an LTV of 60%. Independent financial advice must be sought from a regulated mortgage broker to access this scheme. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up your mortgage repayments. Rates valid as of 28/02/2024.

  • Exciting News: Santander Introduces 5% Deposit Mortgages for New-Build Homes!

In a significant move to support aspiring homeowners, Santander has announced that it will be offering 5% deposit mortgages on new-build homes, marking a remarkable shift from the previous requirements of 15%. The new mortgage product will be available from tomorrow.

This step signifies Santander’s commitment to easing the path to homeownership, particularly for those facing the daunting challenge of saving for a hefty deposit while managing rental payments. Graham Sellar, head of development mortgages at Santander, emphasised the importance of addressing this obstacle, stating, “We know that saving for a deposit is one of the biggest hurdles for aspiring homeowners, especially for those juggling rental payments against trying to save.”

Under this new scheme, customers opting for new-build homes will have the opportunity to secure their dream property with just a 5% deposit.

David O’Leary, executive director at the Home Builders Federation, expressed enthusiasm for Santander’s initiative, highlighting the urgent need to address the housing shortage and facilitate access to homeownership. He remarked, “Santander’s introduction of 95% mortgages for new-build homes is extremely welcome. Most of us recognise that there is a shortage of homes and it’s becoming harder for younger households to step into homeownership.”

  • Christmas Elves Bring Joy to 152 Children

Generosity Shines as Community Comes Together for a Magical Christmas

The Skipton Step Into Action Christmas Elves appeal 2023 has wrapped up another successful year, thanks to the overwhelming support from the local community. A heartfelt message from the organiser extends gratitude to donors and volunteers who played a crucial role in making Christmas special for 152 children across 59 families in Skipton and its surrounding villages.

The appeal, which saw an outpouring of generosity, managed to raise approximately £9500 through monetary donations, gifts, and other items. This substantial sum has been directly channelled towards ensuring that each child received a tailored Christmas present, valued up to £25, making sure that their wishes came true.

Parents were given the opportunity to request specific gifts for their children, and the organisers went above and beyond by supplementing the presents with a selection box, hand-knitted hats or scarves, books, games, toys, stationery, craft kits, and accessories.

A team of 45 dedicated volunteers played a pivotal role in the success of the appeal, from promoting it to local communities and businesses to collecting, sorting, wrapping, and delivering 152 bags of presents.

Walker Foster, NFU Mutual, and ourselves, acted as drop-off points for gifts, facilitating the collection process. Fortem People generously provided free access to their event space for a week, enabling the efficient sorting and wrapping of gifts. Skipton Fire Station continued its support by delivering gifts on a fire engine, adding an extra layer of excitement for the children!

Reflecting on the community’s generosity, Skipton Step Into Action expressed gratitude for the privilege of bringing together those in need with those willing to help. The impact of this initiative was clearly visible through the heartfelt feedback received from the families supported:
